The Institution of Engineering and Technology and BSI have officially released Amendment 4:2026 to BS 7671 (18th Edition Wiring Regulations).

The new amendment can be adopted immediately for new designs and installations. However, the previous edition (BS 7671:2018+A2:2022+A3:2024 – commonly referred to as the “brown book”) will remain valid during a transition period and is set to be withdrawn on 15th October 2026.

Key highlights of Amendment 4 include:

  • Introduction of new requirements for battery energy storage systems.
  • New guidance covering Power over Ethernet (PoE) installations.
  • Updates relating to Functional earthing for ICT systems.
  • Changes affecting Low voltage generating sets and medical locations.
  • Consolidation of previous amendments into a single updated standard (often referred to as the “orange book”)

This amendment reflects the continued evolution of electrical installations, particularly in response to emerging technologies and modern building systems.

Electrical designers, contractors and duty holders should ensure they are familiar with the new requirements ahead of the October 2026 deadline.
